Trump Warns Pro-Palestinian Mayoral Candidate
(MENAFN) During a televised discussion with a news agency on Sunday, US President Donald Trump cautioned that he may halt federal financial support to New York City if Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani fails to "do the right thing" once in office.
Trump's remarks came shortly after Mamdani secured the Democratic nomination for mayor in Tuesday’s primary.
In his statement, the president directly addressed Mamdani’s possible leadership: "If he does get in, I am going to be president, and he is going to have to do the right thing, or they are not getting any money. He has got to do the right thing."
The president broadened his comments to include any future head of the city, stating: "Whoever is mayor of New York is going to have to behave themselves, or the federal government is coming down very tough on them financially."
This is not the first instance in which Trump has issued fiscal warnings.
He had earlier threatened to cut federal funding to several states and academic institutions that did not align with his directives.
In a strongly worded critique, Trump branded Mamdani a "communist" and voiced deep concern over his potential leadership: "He is a communist. I think it is very bad for New York," he said.
He added, "It is shocking," and continued: "I used to say we will never have a socialist in this country, no, but we will have a communist."
Mamdani triumphed over former New York governor Andrew Cuomo in the recent primary, putting him on course to become the city’s first Muslim mayor.
