Mamdani vows to combat Islamophobia, racism against Palestinians
Zohran Mamdani said he intends to make the protection and inclusion of all city residents a central priority of his administration. Reflecting on a recent conversation with a Palestinian student who was subjected to online abuse and death threats, he emphasized his commitment to addressing discrimination in all its forms. “As Mayor … I will make it my job to cherish, protect, and celebrate all New Yorkers and combat Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian racism at every corner,” he said.
Mamdani explained that the student, Mustapha Kharbouch of Brown University, became the target of harassment after an image circulated online showing him wearing a keffiyeh.
According to Mamdani, conspiracy theories falsely linked the student to a fatal shooting, triggering a wave of hostility rooted in Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian prejudice.
He added that Kharbouch’s Palestinian background was used to justify the doxxing and threats directed at him, as stated in Mamdani’s account.
During their phone conversation, the student also shared details about his academic focus on international relations and anthropology, his summer internship in New York City, and his interest in pursuing doctoral studies, Mamdani said.
“I told Mustapha that we would love to have him back in New York City,” said Mamdani, who recently made history by becoming the city’s first Muslim mayor.
Mamdani is scheduled to be sworn into office on Jan. 1, coinciding with New Year’s Day.
