Second Wave of Palestinians Return to Gaza Through Rafah Crossing

(MENAFN) A second cohort of Palestinian evacuees arrived Tuesday at the Rafah crossing to undergo entry protocols, Egyptian media outlets confirmed.

The returning Palestinians had been receiving critical medical treatment and specialized health care at Egyptian hospitals before their repatriation, a news outlet reported.

According to the outlet, the group reached the border crossing earlier Tuesday to complete necessary administrative formalities before crossing into Gaza.

The influx follows Monday's partial reopening of the Rafah crossing after an extended closure.

Israeli media sources indicated that approximately 50 Palestinians are anticipated to enter Gaza, while roughly 150 patients alongside their companions are slated to depart the territory for medical treatment in Egypt.

Gaza health authorities estimate nearly 22,000 patients remain in urgent need of the crossing's full reopening to access vital medical services.

A critical lifeline for humanitarian assistance, Israel seized control of the Rafah crossing in May 2024, nearly nine months into Tel Aviv's devastating military campaign against the Gaza Strip, which has claimed more than 71,000 lives and wounded over 171,000 others since October 2023.

The terminal had been scheduled to reopen in October under the initial phase of a ceasefire agreement, but Israel refused implementation until receiving its final captive held in Gaza, an exchange that occurred last week.

Despite the ceasefire arrangement, Israel has maintained its military operations, killing 524 people and injuring 1,360 others since Oct. 10, according to Gaza's media office.
