EU Parliament Debate Exposes Divisions Over Rights, Migration, Gaza

(MENAFN) According to reports, a debate in the European Parliament over a report on fundamental rights revealed sharp political divisions among lawmakers, particularly between right-wing, centrist, and left-wing groups.

During the session, representatives discussed the state of fundamental rights in the EU for 2024 and 2025, with concerns raised about discrimination, hate speech, and broader social tensions across member states.

A Green Party rapporteur opening the debate stressed that fundamental rights should not be treated as negotiable, warning that exclusion based on identity or belief ultimately undermines safety for society as a whole. She also pointed to rising levels of antisemitism and Islamophobia, arguing that both forms of prejudice must be addressed together rather than separately.

She urged EU institutions and member states to consistently uphold human rights obligations and avoid selective enforcement or protection.

An EU commissioner responsible for justice and rule of law also emphasized that fundamental rights are central to the European project, describing them as essential principles rather than abstract ideas. He warned that these rights are facing pressure from multiple directions, including discrimination and emerging digital challenges, and said the European Commission is using available mechanisms to enforce compliance.

However, the debate became more contentious as political groups on the left criticized the report for not sufficiently addressing the situation in Gaza and broader issues related to Palestine.

The discussion highlighted ongoing disagreements within the EU Parliament over how to balance internal rights concerns with foreign policy and conflict-related human rights issues, reflecting wider divisions among political factions on migration, security, and international crises.
