Paris Plans to Grant Honorary Citizenship to Palestinians
The proposal is set to be tabled before the Paris Council in June, according to the mayor's office, as cited by media.
In a pointed statement underscoring the symbolic weight of the move, the mayor's office invoked the French capital's historic identity as a beacon of human rights.
"Paris has always associated its name with the freedom of peoples and human dignity. It chooses civilians over violence, law over arbitrariness, life over destruction," the mayor's office said.
The office further emphasized the significance of recognizing Palestinian journalists working amid the ongoing conflict, framing the gesture as a defense of press freedom and the public's right to information.
"Honoring them means honoring the fundamental right of societies to know the truth," it added.
If approved, the initiative would mark one of Paris's most direct symbolic interventions in the conflict, aligning the city with a growing number of European municipalities that have moved to express solidarity with Palestinian civilians through formal civic gestures.
